When the storm gets near it is also beneficial to fill up bath tubs and sinks with water that you can use for washing and other basic needs. But be sure not to drink it! You should have drinking water stored separately.

 When it comes to food you will want things that won’t spoil (so nothing frozen or refrigerated) and they should be easy to keep and prepare. Some good ideas for easy meals are dry cereal, peanut butter, apples, bananas, protein bars, or any canned goods. It is also handy to have a small propane or charcoal cooker that you could use to make pasta or rice.

 Some other basic items you should keep in the house include a first aid kit and any other necessary medicines your family may need. This makes sure any minor injuries can be remedied until more help arrives. A flashlight for every member of the household with backup batteries, candles are also a good alternative but make sure to keep an eye on them. A basic tool kit so you can address any damage to your home. Sanitation products like toilet paper, moist towelettes, garbage bags (for trash including used toilet paper which should be kept separate from everyone), and any other personal cleaning supplies.
