Hurricane season occurs from June 1st through November 30th. Although if the weather starts getting warmer, the season can start a bit early. In the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season we had 30 named storms, 12 of which made landfall in the US. It made for quite a busy season and cost over 52 billion dollars in damages. Hurricanes are inevitable, but when they do come we should do our best to be prepared.
Things To Consider
- How many people live in your household? This question is very important because if affects the calculations of things like how much food to buy, what medicines may be needed, how much water and personal supplies will be used. More people, more supplies.
- Do you have a light source? Hurricanes usually come without electricity. Make sure you have a variety of light sources and backup batteries.
- How will you cook your food? Generators can help run some appliances like microwaves. Gas burning camping stoves are an easy option if you want to sauté, grill, or boil water. Having plenty of dry food on hand is always a good idea and you can get things like powdered milk if you really need a bowl of cereal.
- How much First Aid is necessary? Do you have a basic medical kit with supplies and antibiotics? Does anyone in your household take special medication? Make sure you aren’t out of any of the normal household medicines and that you have a basic first aid kit. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
- What’s the water plan? You should keep a store of bottled water to be used if needed. But the first thing you do should be to fill up all water bottles and large containers you have in your home. This includes things like sinks and bathtubs. Your water may be out for a few days and you will need water to wash your body, dishes, drink, and give to your pets (if you have any). Water is something we consume the most of and we can’t go very long without it.
- How will you spend your time? We are so used to having a plethora of electronics and stimuli around us on a regular basis that a blackout can bring on a very eery setting. Make sure you have board games, books, puzzles and other non-electronic based fun that you can spend your time on while you’re stuck inside.
